MEDSTOR CASE STUDY

Marie Curie Children’s Hospital

Medstor The heart of your storage solutions

Marie Curie Children's Hospital, Bucharest - The hospital build by the people.

“Once you know where you want to arrive, once you have a clear objective, there is nothing that can stop you

on your way there.”

Carmen Uscatu and Oana Gheorghiu

The Give Life Association, an NGO founded by Carmen Uscatu and Oana Gheorghiu, has celebrated its greatest achievement to date – the launch of the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital, a dedicated paediatric oncology hospital in Bucharest, financed exclusively by public endowment from more than 350,000 people and 4,000 companies within Romania and beyond.

Medstor was proud to be part of an international group of world-class suppliers who brought their expertise to the project, appropriately named the We Build a Hospital initiative, all inspired by the tireless work of Carmen and Oana. Together, they have delivered an incredible hospital that brings together outstanding functionality and design to create the best possible environment for patient care, and which any country would be proud to include within its healthcare estates.

Uniting international expertise

Right from its initial inception, Carmen and Oana were determined that the hospital should bring together a global team of healthcare design, equipment and procurement specialists. Despite having no background in healthcare themselves other than as volunteers, they used the experience gained in previous projects funded by the Give Life Association to carry out detailed research into what the hospital should look like and the best route to procure the specialist equipment required throughout. This brought them to Romanian medical device specialist Kapamed International, and then to its partners Medstor, Metro Healthcare Solutions, Omnicell, and Palex Hospital Logistics.

Medstor’s initial involvement was in space planning, providing 3D virtual walkarounds free of charge to enable Carmen and Oana to see how the space in the hospital would work with various scenarios. This is an invaluable step in any project, as it informs the choice and configuration of equipment. Allison Seabourne, Sales Director at Medstor, travelled to Romania to meet Carmen and Oana and gain a thorough understanding of their wishes for the materials management side of the hospital’s operations, sharing their ambitious vision from the outset. As the build developed, Medstor provided a wide range of specialist storage equipment, all supplied at preferential rates to support the work being done by the charity. HTM 71 cabinetry, procedure trolleys, shelving systems and trays were shipped to Romania for assembly on site by Kapamed International, Medstor’s distributor in the region.

A hospital of firsts

The Marie Curie Children’s Hospital is the first public hospital in Romania to offer multidisciplinary treatment to children with cancer and severe illnesses; the first with beds for parents and dedicated spaces for children, including a radio station and cinema; the first ICU with patient rooms and access based on the ‘clean hands system, which aims to improve healthcare provider adherence to hand hygiene recommendations; the first completely digitalised medical unit; and the first public healthcare facility to monitor and control energy use via a building management system (BMS). In addition, one of the most important components of the hospital is the first children’s radiotherapy department in the country. Until now, children had to receive radiotherapy treatment in adults’ centres without the possibility of anaesthesia.

In the new oncology facility, designed to be one of the most technologically advanced departments in the southeast of Europe, the young patients will receive world-class care from the clinicians, who have been trained through a partnership with renowned radiotherapy centres in Rome and Dublin. But equally important is the warm, child-centric environment in which they will now receive their treatment, and which is sure to support their recovery.

This emphasis on designing aesthetic spaces that support patient care is central to everything Medstor provides for hospitals and healthcare buildings throughout the world, and the company is extremely proud to see the difference it is making to the young patients and their families in Bucharest’s flagship children’s hospital.
